The Pinnacles and Stromatolites

The Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park lies on the coast, 152 miles north of Perth. The limestone structures are fossilized roots of ancient coastal plants fused with sand. Over the years, wind and drifting sand have sculpted forms that stand from a couple of inches on up to 15 feet tall.

Lake Thetis, just north of the Pinnacles Desert, contains stromatolite structures. Stromatolites are a sedimentary fossil formed by layers of blue-green algae.

Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is located just of the coast from Perth. The island's marsupial inhabitants, quokkas, led to the island's name of Rottnest which means Rat's Nest in Dutch. It is a favorite day-trip destination, with its bleached beaches, rocky coves and blue-green waters.
